Meet the Geek 2012
On February 6th, 2012, Wireshark enthusiasts from Switzerland, Germany and Austria enjoyed a special event: At "Meet the Geek" they took the unique chance to meet Gerald Combs, founder of the open source tool, live at Hotel Hilton Zurich Airport.
In an entertaining way Gerald chatted about the exciting history of the network analysis tool – from the beginning of Ethereal to today's' popular Wireshark. The guest from Davis, California, disclosed interesting details about the open source system behind Wireshark and presented significant features of the new version. He especially explained details about multiple interface capturing and the new file format Pcapng (Pcap next generation). In a relaxed atmosphere the interested participants used the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences and took the chance to talk to Gerald personally.
Wireshark is the world's foremost network protocol analyzer and has won several open source awards. No protocol analyzer comes close to the flexibility, extensibility and user base that supports this stellar project which achieves up to 500'000 downloads per month. It is against this background that the feedback of the attendees on Combs personality was particularly impressive: He had remained modest, sympathetic and authentic. He identified himself with the social idea behind open source – a reason why his reassurance Wireshark would remain open source was given high credibility. With this, he dispelled the most serious concerns of the Wireshark community.
